Collection Scope and Content

This collection includes correspondence, family history materials, poems and drafts, autobiographical essays, spiritualist communications, photographs, a Monhegan Island scrapbook, and a commonplace book. Also included is a three inch bronze bust of Ellen James.

Biographical/Historical Note

Ellen James was born in Saint Joseph, Missouri on October 8, 1885. She spent summers in Colorado, where some of her family lived. One summer in Estes Park, James met writer Sidney Baldwin, with whom she made a home in Boothbay Harbor, Maine until Baldwin's death. James often spent time in Casa Ybel, Florida and Monhegan Island, Maine. Ellen James died in 1977 at age 92.
