Biographical/Historical Note

Daphne Winslow Merrill was born in Rockland and received her undergraduate and Masters degrees from the University of Maine. She also studied languages at Middlebury's Language School, and went on to teach languages at the high school and college levels. Merrill published two books of poetry, "Cones From the Pines of Maine" (Falmouth Publishing House, 1952) and "More Cones From the Pines of Maine" (Dorrance and Company, 1965). Her poetry, described as "simply written, yet profound in mood and imagery," reflects her love of nature and the state of Maine. Merrill also published two non-fiction works about Maine: "The Lakes of Maine" (1973) and "A Salute to Maine" (1983), and was a frequent contributor of articles to the Lewiston Journal Magazine and Down East. She was active in numerous clubs and committees, including the Maine Writers Research Club, for which she served as president for two years.
