Scope and Contents

The contents of this collection reflect Reverend Harrison S. Whitman’s dedication to his faith, as well as to his friends and family, the Seminary, and his private ventures. The Letters, Writings, Photographs, and Memorabilia series includes a wide range of materials, including typed and handwritten correspondence, tax documentation from the state, handwritten notes in ledgers, and photographs. This series focuses on Rev. Whitman's private and professional life, including his time presiding over Westbrook Seminary and his relationships, both between friends and family. The Westbrook College series includes administrative and historical documents, financial records, fundraising documents, and writings by Rev. Whitman. The Orange Grove series includes documents pertaining to Rev. Whitman’s ownership of an orange grove in Limona, Florida including correspondence between Rev. Whitman and W. J. Lewis, who operated the orange grove for Rev. Whitman; and letters from others regarding the orange grove.

Biographical / Historical

Reverend Harrison S. Whitman was born in 1844. After a career as a Unitarian minister, Rev. Whitman became the 19th President of Westbrook Seminary (later Westbrook College). He presided over the Westbrook Seminary from 1892 to 1899. Rev. Whitman lived in Mechanic Falls prior to becoming President of Westbrook Seminary and provided ministry services while living there. During his Presidency, and later as Treasurer in the 1920's, Rev. Whitman organized and assisted with a great deal of fundraising for the college. Following his time as President, Rev. Whitman purchased a plot of land in Limona, Florida, upon which he operated an orange grove. Harrison S. Whitman died in 1932 at age 88.
